This is a pretty good romance involving a strong hero and an innocent heroine. Just before his death, Sarah Thorpe's wealthy English father told her of his long-time affair with his mistress, Celine Couvier, and asked Sarah to visit Celine in France for a month. Sarah's mother had left when Sarah was very young, so it had been just Sarah and her father, and upon his death she felt lost and wanted to follow his wishes. While not a doormat, Sarah is still pretty weak. She is in a serious relationship with Craig, who owns a string of nightclubs, and even though she is very uncomfortable with his lifestyle, his friends, and what she sees as her future should she marry him, Sarah has not sent him packing. She does, however, defy Craig and insist that she will visit Celine for the full month.Celine's husband, we are told, was a cruel man and she feared his revenge on Armand if she left him, so she did not. Celine's son, Armand, who runs his late father's business empire in Paris, is not happy to hear of the wealthy, and no doubt spoiled, English rose's visit to his mother's chateau near France's northern coast, and vows to have as little to do with the woman as possible. Sent to pick up Sarah, he is surprised to find that she is not quite what he expected. Once back at the chateau, where he is staying for 2 weeks to oversee the early spring plowing, which includes his climbing aboard a tractor when necessary, he quickly finds himself attracted to Sarah.
Over the next week and a half, they get to know each better and Armand is clearly interested in Sarah, and Sarah is puzzled about her reaction to him. Armand rasps in flowery prose about his attraction to her, and Sarah trembles when he is near. Complication arise with Craig's arrival and when Violette, the beautiful local girl close to Armand, returns to the village and sees Sarah as a rival. But, the major problems comes from Sarah's fertile imagination about Armand, his relationship to Violette, and his intentions toward her, Sarah.
The characters are done well enough that we get a good idea of what's going on with Sarah and Armand. Armand is strong, both in will and personality, and he expects to get his way. Sarah becomes stronger as the story progresses and she has to face a few crises, but she still seems rather innocent and dense. Celine is portrayed sympathetically as a mistress who was content to see her lover infrequently, and on the sly, since they loved each other- and that was enough. Of them all, Armand was surprisingly the most warm character.
There is no humor, and not a lot of cozy moments. There is a good bit of romantic tension, mainly from dark looks from Armand as he tells Sarah how close he is to losing control. The plot moves along and does not bog down, at all, although some of the events may stretch the reader's imagination and try their patience.
Overall, it is a read that most will enjoy, but I doubt it will be on many's shelf of favorites. The whole idea that unfaithfulness is acceptable and romantic put me off, I must admit, but that's something I feel strongly about whether it is in fiction or real life. There is sex and descriptions of intimate touching, so if you are looking for a "clean" romance, you might wish to look elsewhere. The ending is not rushed and we even get a glimpse of their happiness in later times.
