The overall theme of this book has great promise and there are moments of complete delight sprinkled throughout but the overall feel of it and some of its characters really leave a lot to be desired.

The heroine of this story, Anne, is not my favorite leading lady. She's tolerable at best but not one I want to root or champion for. I understand her struggles throughout the story and like how Ms. Page tried to make her complex with a deep background, unfortunately the thought and the transition to paper did not resonate with me. Anne spends 80% of the time (SPOILER AHEAD) either bemoaning the situation she is in, faking an orgasm (through the first 40% of the book by Kindles estimation) or running away making the Hero chase after her. The last 30% of the book she keeps fleeing only to be caught....then she flees again only to be caught. I honestly started skimming the pages just because I wanted to finish.

Devon the Hero was a much more developed character, you felt his pain, struggle and need (most of the time). I kept waiting for more from him though as if he was almost a perfect character but one things was missing. Ever get that feeling? I enjoyed seeing him grow and learn and over come the pains of his past. That is until the "h" kept running away every chance she got, at that point I was ready to smack the man upside the head for going after her.

The secondary characters are laughable and under developed (except for the 'H"'s few family members) and the extra plot twists which started out promising through the first part of the book became boring and tedious by the end. And for the romance/sex/sensuality aspect of it all.....UGH! I don't need the most descriptive book in the world to make a scene inviting but the ones between these two were just awkward to read about. Again our "h" spent the first handful of times faking her orgasm then she had one but she had faked it so many times I honestly didn't believe it when it really happened for her (not sure the "H" did either). The love scenes seem misplaced a few times and the romance made no sense. I didn't get the feeling once that these two actually desired one another.

This is just one persons opinion and just because this book wasn't to my liking doesn't mean the author isn't. I've read Sharon Page before and I will again as some of her stories are riveting and usually her writing style is great. This just wasn't the book for me.

Wonderful read!! I love the character development and how love conquers all! They are my Fav couple in all the books by this author I have read.
Good read but not sure if i would read this book again
I like all historical romances....what can i say? Im a sucker for ball gowns and rake's that change their ways for love.
I enjoyed the premise and the fact that the hero was blind due to a war injury. Nightmares from his days in battle haunted him. He was definitely a tortured hero - my favorite kind.
It's hard for me to believe this was written by the author of Sin. The writing here is awkward and often inane. The plot is weak and the ending is unbelievable if you know anything about 19th century English society. Don't waste your money or your time.
Very interesting story a beautiful love story. Loved the characters in the story. It is sad what took place in the past.
I've enjoyed other books by this author, but I finished this one feeling unconvinced of any happy-ever-after ending for this couple. Why?

Well, she may have started out as a gently-bred young lady, but after FIVE YEARS of captivity in a brothel, Anne can no longer be considered "angelic" in any way, shape, or form. She has been kidnapped, beaten, raped, and forced to service men, including men of the TON, and there is no way she would ever be accepted into society, where she would be recognized by former johns and not allowed anywhere near their wives or daughters.

That said, I suppose it isn't fair to also blame the duke for hesitating to consider marrying her so long after realizing his feelings for her. Well, yes, his mother made him promise to marry for love, and he promised himself he wouldn't betray his wife, so he really had to decide to marry her or say goodbye to her, and he could not for the LONGEST time. But Anne could see the writing on the wall, and she made the right decision to leave him.

In my opinion, the author wrote herself into a corner on this one, and the way she chose to resolve this issue was just not convincing to me. There is just no way this heroine would ever have been accepted by his family or her great-grandmother, let alone the ton. The way she was treated when recognized in the park by a former client. . . are we really supposed to believe that somehow the duke's reputation will protect her in his absence? Or that people would not notice the fact that the marriage and the birth of the child occurred at the same time?

I WISH something like this could have happened, but there is no way that such a marriage could have done anything but drag down the duke and his entire family. It's not fair, and I hate it, but five years as a prostitute will disqualify any woman from a HEA ending with a duke. Frankly, my impression is that few prostitutes lived past their 20's in those days, what with primitive contraceptive methods and sexually-transmitted diseases, not to mention the harsh treatment.

Maybe Anne could have been only a LITTLE bit ruined (in secret)? Or the duke could have been a commoner who decided to run off to America with her for a new start? Or just decided to avoid society and immerse himself in good works (although this would be hard since he had a mother and sisters to consider)?

As you can see, I really want to believe in this story, but it's just not happening. There is just too much water under the bridge for Anne to be redeemed. And as a duchess? Never!
