One of the most poignant, amazing, heart wrenching, well written novels I have ever read. Reading has always been my passion but now that I'm 75 years old I have the time to joyfully read many many (too many perhaps) hours every day. This is a book that will always resonate inside of me. Thank you sooo very much for writing such a powerful novel. At first I was mildly put off by all the political shenanigans that were discussed but they were necessary for a background to the remainder of this story and so glad I didn't stop reading.

I wish had a rating that readers could use when the book just finished transcends the 5 star rating. That is how I feel about "The Promise of Stardust". Once I started reading the story of Elle and Matt, my usual daily routines just stopped. I could not focus on anything but continuing with this story, which had wrapped itself around my heart and mind, from the very beginning.

I do read many many books in a week and lots of them have an impact on me, but this one was different. Maybe, because I am a nurse, former ICU/ER, maybe because I had a child, who at age 3 who was determined to have no viable brain activity, after succumbing to a virulent pneumonia, and I had some excruciating decisions to make.

Ms. Sibley portrayed the characters with such uniqueness, personality and different ways to show and feel love. All were different, but the interplay between all of them was exquisite and credible. This book makes you think about life, its value and how to make the most of it.

Thank you, Ms. Sibley for one of the best books I have ever read.
I don't usually read novels that are as emotionally charged as this one. The premise of this book caught my attention because I teach high school science. It was interesting to see the emotions, legal positions, and conflicts of interest presented in this novel . The main character Elle is an astronaut who is very intelligent, compassionate, and desperate to be a mommy. During her years she had to in Dewar the agonizing slow death of a mother who would never recover. Due to watching the daily decline, she feared wasting away in agony as the most horrific of endings. Her husband, himself a neurosurgeon, understands this better than most, so when she falls and dies, it crushes him, but he knows he must let her go. The twist is that she is pregnant...so what do you choose? Vegetative life with the possibility of the child being born, or death in peace. This books is well written, and handles the thoughts, emotion, and pain realistically. I will not spoil the ending, but I am thankful this author was capable of a fitting ending that was not simple. This book is thought provoking on many levels and will certainly move your heart.
Well written, very poignant story about the efforts of a man who also happens to be a neurosurgeon to save the life of his unborn child after his wife has been declared brain dead. I thought the author skilfully handled both the medical and legal aspects of what this involved and the story flowed well between reflections of them as a couple and the husband in the present. I read criticism of the author due to pro-life vs pro-choice issues but I didn't see that as the focus of the story. I enjoyed it for what it was- a heart wrenching story of the struggle to make decisions while continuing to find reasons to go on after life has dealt you a painful situation that is beyond comprehension. Very moving story that required me to have a box of tissues handy!
I loved that this book felt deeply honest. No one was portrayed as perfect, and the characters were complex enough that I could feel some empathy to each of the (sometimes) stridently different personalities. I cared enough about the characters that I wanted to know them even more. This book explores great love, but also hardship; it explores strength, weakness, fear, heartache, hope and deep grief. Anyone who hasn't allowed himself or herself to ask deep questions about what life and death really mean, or to dive deeper yet, and ask "what do I really believe about the end of life, and under what circumstances should people be "let go," this book is a real primer on those questions. It is multi-faceted in that many attitudes and beliefs get right up front and personal and tend to make one wonder about his/her own thoughts about such matters. THIS BOOK IS A GOOD READ, A THOUGHTFUL, DELIBERATE PIECE OF WRITING THAT WILL MAKE YOU THINK about things you may have avoided thinking about at all before. At the same time, it is a deeply personal love story that will stay with the reader long after the book has been read.
I can't rate it higher than five stars unfortunately! I saw this book a couple of years ago as a Daily Deal, read it, fell in love with it, and now have it as a and "dead-tree" version. I don't know WHY I didn't review it at the time I originally read it, but when I saw it on sale today for 99 cents, I thought, "I have to go back and review it!"

There's been a lot of discussion about death with dignity when someone is disabled due to the new Me Before You movie. This is a different take on that situation. Elle has no brain activity after a fall, and when Matt finds out she's pregnant, all hell breaks loose because his decision to terminate life support is much more complicated. EVERYBODY including Elle's ex wants a say in whether she should be allowed to live or die.

Elle's expressed wish was not to be kept alive indefinitely since she had watched her mother die of breast cancer when she was a teenager. But she had never considered the possibility of being pregnant when a decision like this had to be made. Several miscarriages/pregnancy losses had made Matt think of what Elle would do for that child. The answer he came up with was ANYTHING.

Oh, so heartbreaking. Everybody was trying to do the right thing for Elle. The question was what the right thing would and should be.
