What would you do if you think you saw someone who is supposed to be dead? Jeff Logan, a successful attorney, is vacationing with his family on the island of Saint Martin when he thinks he sees his best friend and college roommate, Mark Kowalski, nicknamed Ski, who drowned in Boston sixteen years ago. Ski was older than a typical college student, flamboyant and impulsive. Jeff was serious, steady and methodical. Ski had money and spent it freely. Jeff was frugal. Despite the differences, they became close friends and Jeff was in awe of the free-spirited party animal particularly his success with women. Jeff struggled with guilt after Ski drowned because he felt he could have prevented it had he been there when it happened. Seeing this person he thinks may be Ski triggers flashbacks and feelings of guilt and inadequacy in Jeff.
Jeff tries unsuccessfully to confront the person he believes is Kowalski and heads back to Chicago at the end of his vacation still unsure if it was him. Back home, Jeff's career unexpectedly runs into a brick wall, when he is forced out of his law firm. Now with time on his hands, Jeff decides to try to get to the bottom of whether the person he saw really was Mark Kowalski. He enlists the help of Taylor Jefferson, another college friend of Kowalski's to help. Taylor and Jeff quickly learn that there is way more to the story of Mark's drowning then they thought possible. Quickly they find themselves in the middle of the dangerous shadow war involving the DEA, the cartels and local law enforcement that grows more dangerous with every passing day. Along the way Jeff has to confront his own personal demons as they uncover many painful truths about the person they thought was their friend.

I like mysteries and am always on the lookout for an author I haven't met yet. I bought 'The Friend You Keep' on the recommendation of a friend and I wasn't disappointed. The characters are realistic. Questions that kept popping up for me were answered in the stories own time. The book is a bit of a page turner, just when you think you have it figured the author throws a curve ball. I liked his segue into past events from when the heroes were in college. As a part-time beach bum and a long time diver and sailor, I especially liked the pictures painted by Mr Rohner with his descriptions of the island of St Martin. It allowed me a brief respite from the rain and cold of autumn. My only complaint was with the editing. I have found this with other Kindle books and I suspect this may be because the books are self published. If that is the case with 'The Friend You Keep', I'd like to know why a publisher hasn't picked up this book/author especially after reading books not nearly as good as this one that have been published and printed by respected publishers. At any rate, I'll be looking for Mr Rohner's next book.Product details

The Friend You Keep edition by Joseph Rohner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Would make a great movie. ... well presented .....
I enjoyed reading this book more than many others, kept my interest throughout the book. Highly recommend and looking forward to the next one
Very intriguing storyline with interesting characters and lots of action. Pushes the boundaries of friendship to extreme limits, but not totally unbelievable. Great read.
This is a good book for a summer read or by a warm fireplace in winter. The plot moves well and the characters' backgrounds are cleverly interwoven with the action. There are many twists and turns so you have to pay attention! I thought I'd guessed the ending but the bad guys are the good guys and vice versa. Very entertaining.
I didn't think I would but I enjoyed this book very much.
Joe Rohner's first novel made me relive my days in the Boston area and think about my college buddies and the friends I made in the Air Force while stationed on Cape Cod.
His attention to detail in describing each location made me feel like I was there.
I liked his characters and the way he developed them. It seemed like we all had friends like these (not exactly like all of them!).
Each time I thought I had the story figured out, there was another twist and another "Bad Guy" to deal with.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a little mystery and thinks of "yesterday's friends" once in a while.
The imagery in this book was great, was very easy to follow, and I felt like the action and story was unfolding right before my eyes. The character development was excellent and I kept thinking how great a movie would be based off this book. The book was entertaining, exciting, included several plot twists, encompassed heart warming tales of college buddies and love interests. The main character, Jeff Logan, was a terrific portrayal of a man that followed his curiosity, unwavering moral aptitude, and determination into hot water because it was simply the right thing to do. The book includes witty banter, humor, thought provoking scenarios, problem solving, triumph, nostalgia, defeat, and most of all, heroism.
I'm a big fan and can't wait to read the next book and see this one picked up for a movie!
