I've always described myself as a stoic and always meant to widen my reading of the ancient Greeks and Romans. I decided to start the expansion with Seneca. I've been reading and re-reading a letter every few days. Each one is a jewel of advice, wisdom and compassion.

His letters were written to a young friend on virtually every topic imaginable. The advice is always cogent and true and never trite or condescending. Even though the Romans lived a much harsher life and people matured earlier, I think that one would have to be in middle age to fully appreciate Seneca's wisdom, however, this doesn't mean that the young shouldn't read Seneca - they should just make certain that they re-read him. One of the glories of a reading life is that great and even good books, change as we do. This is especially true of the writings of Seneca.

His wise council applies even to our fragmented, contemporary life. His essay on not wasting time, even when manically moving about is especially appropos. He points out that death is not before us, but behind us as everyday that we have lived already belongs to death - simultaneously sobering, hopeful and true - like all of these essays.

Next I want to ferret out his tragedies as I understand that they were a source of inspiration for the great Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedians and I am certain they contain Seneca's wry wisdom. Highly recommended to those seeking to live life to the fullest.

Letters from a Stoic Seneca [Illustrated] eBook Lucius Annaeus Seneca Seedbox Classics Reviews

I haven't been able to get through a shame since I admire Stoic philosophy. What is needed is a modern translation. This is so tedious to get through!
Inspiration and wisdom at a discount--what more can one want? Offers a navigable Table of Contents and presents the author's wisdom and knowledge unadulterated.
Very practical life instructions. Love to access it from my Kindel.
First let me say I bought this for my kindle fire hd and I'm not sure if we have different definitions of the word "illustrated", but I have no "illustrations". With that said, this is an amazing book. While I read this it feels very personal as if I were replying to the letters. I've been studying stoicism for a few months now and this is a must read for anyone curious about it.
Seneca wrote short letters on various philosophical themes such as dealing with the fear of death. I read one every evening to meditate on. The philosophical ideas are presented in a very clear and easy to understand way. They are on things that are just as relevant today as when it was written. You don't have to be a stoic or a philosopher to enjoy these philosophical letters.
Seneca was my introduction to the Stoics. (Nice to have all his letters in one book. Other version of Letters from a Stoic are _selected_ letters.) I'll comment on two things that I enjoyed.

1. "Letters from a Stoic" seems to me to have a 19th-century humor like Melville or Twain with a dash of Ambrose Bierce. I enjoyed that but wondered if it was truly Seneca or due to the translator. Upon further research it was not the translator. Either Seneca was eighteen centuries ahead of his time, or the more things change, the more they stay the same.

2. Seneca's letters present Stoicism in a way that highlights its similarities to cognitive behavioral therapy and basics of Buddhism. That'll makes ya stop and think.
Early on, I read this, and was hooked

“For we are mistaken when we look forward to death; the major portion of death has already passed. Whatever years be behind us are in death’s hands.”

Though this is a work of philosophy, it is really short essays about specific things. Even when you don’t agree with the philosophy, you will probably find yourself appreciating it and enjoying the quirky way Seneca thought and expressed himself.

I have only read something like a tenth of the book. Normally I would not review a book so soon (normally I don’t review books at all unless I have something nice to say).

I am reading this book while reading probably a dozen others. It is what I do. I read from bed during hours when I should be sleeping, and I read slowly because of it.

This book is not like a novel, with a plot you must follow. It is not like a text book, with pre-requisite knowledge you must retain to progress. This is the philosopher’s equivalent of “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.” The essays are small, self-contained units of entertaining delight. Each morsel can be digested within minutes, and you will often revisit them for days to come.

Good Job, Seneca.
